Tikkurila Paint used by talented 13-year-old American girl painter to draw backdrops for K11 Musea

The newly launched K11 Musea, a retail and arts complex located in the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade front, has invited a talented 13-year-old American girl painter Elisabeth to make a special trip to Hong Kong to paint a series of spectacular cartoon backdrops for viewing by the public during the Christmas and New Year season from 13 December 2019.

Elisabeth specially requested the PR firm in charge of the project to order the Finland-made Tikkurila Paint, as well as some other acrylic coating products, for use as the pigment for her colourful backdrop. She has used Tikkurila Paint for her artwork before, and is well aware that it is odourless, quick-drying, eco-friendly and rich in colour.

K11 Musea is a ten-storey cultural-retail destination on TST waterfront that brings together retail, art, culture, and entertainment all under one roof. The backdrops painted by Elisabeth are on display on the ground floor of Donut Playhouse at the TST East MTR “J2” EXIT.

It’s certainly worth taking some time to pay a visit there.

Our customer Mr Cheng, who lives in Saigon, likes to hang his favourite photos, pictures and ornaments on the wall. While in good mood, he would use a piece of chalk to draw graffiti on the wall.

However, he didn’t need to fix a nail or hang a blackboard on the wall. All he had to do was just to apply Feelings Magnetic Paint and Liitu Blackboard Paint on it. The so-called “Blackboard Paint” is not black only, and can be tinted into any colour of your choice.

It is simple to create a magnetic blackboard wall: First of all, apply primer on the smooth wall, then scrap three coats of magnetic paint on it, once a day, before applying the primer again. Finally, apply two coats of the blackboard paint, and then you’re done.

The “magnetic blackboard wall” is excellent in quality with three layers of Feelings Magnetic Paint and two coats of Liitu Blackboard Paint. Only narrow strips of magnetic tape are stuck on the back of photo frames and metal plates.

Water-borne Oil for Wooden Exterior Furniture

Tightening environmental legislation means that the wood industry needs more environmentally friendly products, which ensures that water-borne products in particular will become increasingly popular in the wood industry. Traditionally, exterior wood oils have been solvent-borne products, but Tikkurila has developed a new water-borne product, which offers many advantages over older solvent-borne products.
Pinja W-Oil

Pinja W-Oil is a fast drying, waterborne wood oil that penetrates deeply into the wood; it contains highly efficient fungicides and anti-mould agents, which prevent the growth of mould and blue stain. The oil also has very good water-repellent properties that reduce cracking in the wood. As a water-borne product, Pinja W-Oil is environmentally friendly and easy to use. During application and drying the smell of the product is only slight and the VOC emissions are very low compared to solvent-borne products.

Recommended uses
Typical customers who use Pinja W-Oil are producers of log houses, doors and windows, exterior wooden constructions, such as panels, fences and garden furniture. The oil can be used on all principal wood types – pine, spruce, oak, etc.

Applicaton methods
Pinja W-Oil can be applied by spraying, dipping and flow coating or with a brush, and the application process is very simple. Normal wet film thickness, without thinning, is approx. 80-120 g/m² and the drying time at room temperature is from 10 to 60 min., depending on colour, temperature and ventilation.

The oil can be used as a primer and as a top layer; a separate impregnation agent is not required. Note: Pinja W-Oil can also be used on vacuum impregnated wood. Good external durability is achieved by using 2- or 3-layer systems. For example, on exterior walls 2 layers are sufficient. Note: It is also very important to paint the ends of wooden panels to prevent water penetration through the open pores in the wood.

The lifetime of these systems is normally 2-5 years, depending on weather conditions, e.g. sunshine, temperature and rain. A major benefit of Pinja W-Oil is that it is fast drying compared with conventional painting systems. Application by dipping or flow coating is easy and production efficiency is very high. Pinja W-Oil can also be polished with a soft cloth or other soft media. Polished surfaces are silkier and feel smoother on contact, which is an advantage for garden furniture, for instance.

Maintenance Repainting with Pinja W-Oil is very easy. Deteriorating, dirty surfaces can be washed with an appropriate detergent or mould remover and then thoroughly rinsed with water. Loose materials must be removed with a scraper or sand paper. To improve adhesion, the area should be lightly sanded and the sanding dust removed. The surface can be repainted with l or 2 evenly applied coats of Pinja W-Oil.

Painting interior walls is an easy and quick way to remodel an apartment.  These instructions will help even novices to achieve a good end result.

Clean the wall to be painted with Maalipesu (a cleaning agent) according to the instructions on the label. Cover floors with paper. Use masking tape to cover baseboards, sockets and light switches.

Fill any holes and cracks with Presto FL renovation filler. Sand the dried surface and remove sanding dust.  Paint the patched surfaces with Varma Primer. The wall is painted with matte Harmony Interior Paint.

(Alternatively, you may choose to use any of Tikkurila’s other super eco-friendly paints, e.g. Joker Interior Wall Paint, Premium Ecological Interior Paint, Toha Kids Room Paint, Nova Plast 7 Wall Paint, etc.)

Mark off the edges either with a paint edger or a brush and masking tape. It’s recommended to use an extension pole while painting. It makes painting more ergonomic and the end result will be tidier.

Cover the paint tray with a plastic bag so it will remain tidy for the next time it is used. Roll the roller in the tray so that it is completely covered by paint and to ensure that the paint is well absorbed.

Try the same amount of paint consistently so that the surface will be uniform. Start painting from the right if you are right-handed. Ensure there is enough lighting.

Apply the paint 2 or 3 roller widths at a time in crisscross strokes and finish in sole strokes going from the bottom of the wall upwards.  Always keep the side of the roller that is attached to the pole away from the finished surface as that side of the roller is heavier.

The painted surface will dry quickly so don’t touch the painted surface again. You can apply a second coat in an hour if necessary.

Wrap up the tools tightly in a plastic bag for the duration of the break. Remove the masking tape as soon as you have finished painting. Wipe the sides of the paint can and close the lid carefully. Wash the tools with soap and water or tikkurila’s special tool cleaner.

You can now enjoy the refreshed atmosphere in your home.

Nova 7 Wall Paint was accredited with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel soon after its formula was upgraded in early 2016, and was later approved by the Finnish Allergy and Asthma Federation as a cooperation product with the right to use the Federation’s Allergy and Asthma Label. As such, Nova Plast 7 has become a truly super eco-friendly paint.

The Allergy and Asthma Label awarded by European countries indicates that a product has passed a series of professional tests and meets the strict product-specific requirements, containing no fragrances or other generally irritating or sensitizing agents. The label helps customers select products that do not generally irritate or sensitize the skin or cause respiratory symptoms.

Paint selection often neglected by homeowners

Homeowners planning renovations often care about every single detail of their renovation projects except the selection of paint, which in effect is the single building material covering their home’s walls and ceilings most extensively. In this connection, they often just listen to the suggestions of their designers or painters, or simply leave it to the contractor to provide services and materials.

Labour-and-material painting package provides the cheapest paint

Painting contractors often offer to do the job at a labour-and- material package price.  However, the paint to be provided under the package is usually the cheapest within a product line, far from being able to meet the environmental requirements of an eco-conscious homeowner.

No knowledge, no choice

Why do most homeowners fail to specify their requirements when it comes to the issue of paints? The reason is simply that they are not knowledgeable enough to make a choice. However, how should you choose the paints to be used for renovation?

What do you know about paint?
To most of us, all paints look pretty much the same in the can, but in fact each has its own particular formula. A typical latex paint can contain 15 to over 20 ingredients, which can be grouped into four categories:

  • Pigments are fine granular solids in the paint to give opacity and the ability to “hide” the surface it is applied to. (Colorants are the tints added at the retail shop to produce the exact colour required according to a chosen colour code.) Quality paint contains better pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, a very pure white powder with very good hiding power.
  • Resins (or binders) are the ingredients that hold the pigments and colorants in place after the paint dries. The best latex resins are made of acrylic, and the best acrylic resins are made from small particles that can deeply penetrate the pores and “grab on”. That’s why high-quality binders last longer and better resist blistering, peeling and wear.
  • Solvents (also called carriers) are the liquids that transport the paint ingredients from the brush or roller onto the wall. In latex paint the main solvent is water, which evaporates as the paint dries.
  • Additives are various chemicals incorporated to provide significant effects on the product, e.g. those added to enhance flow properties, improve the finished appearance, control skinning, etc. All latex paints contain additives, but high-quality paints contain more or better ones that also cost more.

High-quality paint contains more solids

High-quality paint can be easily identified by the fact that it has more total solids (including pigments and resins) and fewer solvents than ordinary paints. It is therefore thicker, covers a much larger area, hides better and easier to apply. Even if the two go on with the same thickness, when the solvents evaporate, a high-quality paint leaves a thicker, tougher film.

On the contrary, low-quality paint has fewer solids and more solvents. Once the solvents evaporate, the thinner paint film left behind is less durable and doesn’t cover as well. You will have to spend more time and money repainting, but still may not be able to achieve the performance of a high-quality paint.

High-quality paint is more eco-friendly

High-quality paint is usually produced in line with strict environment control and is more eco-friendly than low-quality paint. For the sake of your own health and that of your family, it is desirable that an eco-friendly paint be chosen for your renovation project. But how do you identify an eco-friendly paint? In fact, all you need to do is simply to select one that contains near-zero VOC, i.e. volatile organic compounds (including formaldehyde). These compounds give long-term emissions of toxic fumes in the air inflicting great impact on human health. Besides, an eco-friendly paint must not contain such soluble heavy metals as cadmium, lead, chromium VI, mercury, arsenic, barium, selenium and antimony.

Poor quality paint can cause cancer

This writer has a relative living in a three-storey village house, which was painted from roof to ground all by himself a few years ago. A few months after the DIY painting project, he noticed some red spots on his body. Upon diagnosis, he was found to have contracted secondary myeloma, which is a kind of blood cancer that the doctor said was not inherited but most probably caused by contact with some toxic chemicals. According to what he recalled, the only stuff containing chemicals that he had had long-term contact with during the period was the paint with irritating odours that he used to coat his house. So it was the most likely cause of his illness.

Eco standards set under environmental laws

Under Hong Kong’s environmental laws, VOC limits, expressed in terms of grams per litre of coating in a ready to use condition, have been prescribed for all kinds of paints, e.g. 50 grams per litre for flat coatings, 150 grams for non-flat coatings, 200 grams for primers, etc. However, paints with VOC content limits just meeting the requirements can only be taken as having achieved a mere pass, but can hardly be regarded as eco-friendly.

Safe to move in right after painting

Most of the really eco-friendly brands of paint have a long history and are awarded a variety of environmental accreditations. Their VOC contents are far below the limits set by law, and may be as low as near zero or even undetectable. They do not give out irritating odours and homeowners can move in as soon as painting work is completed.

Finland’s Tikkurila Paint is world-renowned for being eco-friendly and durable

All the above typical traits of high-quality paint are found in Tikkurila coatings. It is a brand of super eco-friendly and super durable paint from the home of Santa Claus in Finland offering perfect protection for ceilings and walls in your home and business.

Tikkurila Paint initially entered the China and Asia markets in 2002 under its premier brand of ‘Feelings’, and therefore it has also been known as such in the region. It has now become one of China’s top ten eco-friendly paints.

Boasting a history of over 150 years since its foundation in 1862, and manufactured according to the most stringent environmental control and safety standards, Tikkurila Paint contains almost zero formaldehyde and VOC emissions, and has been proudly awarded the world’s most authoritative eco-labels and accreditations, including the EU Ecolabel, Finnish M1 Emission Classification of Building Materials, European Allergy and Asthma Label, Swan Ecolabel, Marine Equipment Directive, etc.

Tikkurila Paint is not only eco-friendly but also super durable because the Company formulates exterior coatings for the harsh conditions of Northern Europe where the extremes of cold and heat demand a coating that is flexible, durable and retains its finish and colour for many years. The same approach to performance has been applied to coatings for interiors.

A state-of- the art tinting system that the brand adopts allows you to choose from an array of thousands of different colours. The system uses near zero VOC-colourants that enhance the environmental performance of tinted paints to the highest level; completely revolutionary, this system wasn’t available until Tikkurila created it back in 1970.

Tikkurila’s headquarters in Finland have an open field where sample coatings of different colours and shades are exposed to sunlight and rain especially for research and experimental purposes, and some of the samples there have been there for more than 20 years without resulting in any colour change. It proves that where a paint is tinted with Tikkurila’s own colourants, the resulted colour of the coating can remain unchanged for well more than a decade.

Tikkurila doesn’t just set a benchmark, it surpasses it – this paint is quite simply the only choice for those who want to use a product that is both stunning and sustainable!

A wall coated with Toha Kid’s Room Paint is not only good for children to draw graffiti on (using a water-based pen) but can also become an art corner for a professional painter! Karen especially bought a can of the eco-friendly paint from us and acquired all the necessary inks, drawing materials and tools for her painting project. She then spent three weeks painting her wall picture carefully stroke by stroke, rubbing out any inadvertent mistakes with a wet towel and making corrections repeatedly until completion.
